Our History

When you train at Gracie Humaita, you become part of one of the oldest and most respected traditions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Our lineage traces back to the Humaita district of Brazil, where the legendary Helio Gracie developed his unique and efficient style of Jiu-Jitsu. Helio passed this knowledge to his son, Royler Gracie, who would go on to become a martial arts icon in his own right.

David Adiv, a dedicated student and later training partner of Royler, helped him secure multiple championship titles. David’s technical mastery of the art earned him recognition as one of the most skilled black belts in the world.

JW Wright, a highly decorated martial artist known for producing world-class competitors, earned his black belt under both David Adiv and Royler Gracie. He later trained Steve Yount, who brought the Gracie Humaita tradition to Texas and earned his own black belt under JW.

Steve’s son, Andy Yount, followed in his father’s footsteps, training under JW Wright and earning his black belt as well. Ryan Reed began his journey under Andy Yount, who passed down the knowledge, discipline, and traditions of Gracie Humaita. Eventually, Ryan was promoted to black belt, continuing this proud lineage.

At Gracie Humaita, you are standing on the shoulders of giants. The standards are high, the traditions deep, and the responsibility great. Wearing the Gracie Humaita patch is not just a symbol—it’s an honor.
